Operation Vacation Austin Texas

Welcome

Soldiers today do not get the recognition they deserve for defending our country and keep us safe from harm so the Rotary Club of Austin has decided to do something about that. In partnership with the Austin Hotel and Lodging Association, Greater Austin Restaurant Association, Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, Around Austin, Inc. and the Rotary Clubs of Killeen and Killeen Hewights, the Rotary Club of Austin adopted a program called OPERATION VACATION.

Operation Vacation once a month selects one soldier and his family from Ft. Hood and sends them on a weekend vacation all expenses paid to Austin, Texas. Ft. Hood gives the soldier the weekend off and the program partners do the rest. The main requirement in the selection of this family is the fact that the soldier has either already served duty in Iraq or will be going to Iraq in the near future. The goal of the program is to provide recognition and quality relaxation time for these families who have willingly sacrificed their own needs to defend and service our country. The project in Austin just started this fall and it will be hosted its sixth military family Valentine weekend, February 15-16.

“Having experienced this project first hand, I must say this is one of the most rewarding projects the Rotary Club of Austin has undertaken. The families are in shock that someone cares enough to recognize them for what they feel is their daily job but most importantly, it gives these families a chance to enjoy quality time together in our beautiful city far away from their regular military duties,” says Rotary Project chair, Mary Reynolds.
